Asleep at the Wheel of Life

Is your life on autopilot? Do you move through the motions to make it through each day?

Do you get up, take care of your family, go to work, take care of everyone and everything at work, come home at the end of the day and take care of everyone and everything AGAIN…then crash at the end of the day?

Does this sound familiar? You might be asleep at the wheel of life.asleep-at-the-wheel-commercial

Here are some other indicators that you might be asleep:

  • Everyone else comes first and you are last on your list.
  • You find yourself bitter, angry and resentful because no one helps you.
  • You keep doing more, hoping for happiness.
  • You “forget” about your self care.
  • You feel like life is passing you by.
  • You have no energy.
  • You feel like you are living a lie.

I know what it is like, because I was asleep at the wheel of my own life.

Not too long ago I was living the life I thought was planned out for me. I had my personal and professional life in order…or so I thought.

I made it look good on the outside with my smile and my mask of happiness. On the inside, I was lost and empty.

I didn’t see the dysfunction I was immersed in. I didn’t see the crazy behavior I was a part of. I didn’t see how unhealthy my choices were. I didn’t see that there were options to find peace and happiness. I was too afraid to look at my own life.

Have you ever felt this insanity too?

It took the 2×4 of crisis for me to slow down and take that deep honest look at my life. Once I began the process of waking up, I saw that the more I healed my inner world, then my outer world began to shift. After a decade of inner transformation myself, now I support women and men to wake up to their lives!

honor yourselfIt is time to wake up.

If you feel an inner calling to awaken to your life, the time is now!

I have a 5 step process that will support you:

  1. Slow down.  Create quiet time every day just for yourself and your inner reflection. This could be a morning meditation, prayer, journaling or all of the above.
  2. Become aware of your life. Pay attention to what disturbs your peace. What upsets you…and why? What brings you joy…and why? Be curious, without judgment, to all of your life.
  3. Choose what honors you and your highest good. In the space of awareness of your life, now you can make the choice to let go of the old behaviors, habits and patterns that don’t serve you. You can simultaneously choose to bring more joy and upliftment into your life.
  4. Take action. Every step you take in the awakening process can be exciting AND fear filled. Take action anyways! Taking action despite the fear is called courage. Take one step at a time to honor yourself. Feel the feelings before, during and after each action step. Resistance might show up and know that it is a normal process. Inquire inside about the resistance (which is usually fear) and continue taking action.
  5. Create support structures. Waking up to your life requires support. This can be family, friends, therapists, coaches, communities in addition to asking for support from God (Spirit, Universe, Creator, Source…whatever fits for you) and other spiritual resources.

A decade ago I couldn’t have guessed where I would be today in my life, relationships and career. Because of my own awakening to my life, I have created the life and work of my dreams! I continue to be keenly aware in my life and move to a place of peace much quicker than I may have in the past.

The more I continue to do my inner work, I can take my clients that that deep place of healing as well.

I feel so blessed to share my gifts to support others moving through their awakening. As they wake up, then they become the mentors and role models for others in their life.

As each one of us awakens, we expand the ripple effect of light and illumination to the world.

In the silence, they heard.

In September last year, a small group of courageous women joined me in the pines of Flagstaff to listen to the Whispers of their Soul.

They were stressed out, over worked busy professional women who knew that something was missing in their lives.

Business deadlineThey thought that working harder would be the answer.  It wasn’t.

They thought that making more money was the answer.  It wasn’t.

They thought that they didn’t have time for a retreat. They found the time.

In the silence, they heard.

They opened their eyes, minds and hearts and asked themselves these questions in the silence of the majestic forest:

Who am I?

What do I desire?IMG_0879

What does my soul want me to know?

What is in the way from me creating my desires?

What is my next step?

In the silence, they heard.

They were astonished with the profound messages they heard from the intelligence of their heart and soul.  They heard their truth from deep inside themselves.

In the sacredness of the container of this retreat, they were able to listen to the whispers of their soul.

They trusted these messages and knew that it was imperative to trust this sacred and wisdom filled part of themselves and to take action in their lives to bring the peace and happiness they so desired.

In the silence, they heard.

Each one of these women’s lives has completely transformed since this retreat. By listening to their soul, releasing their blocks, and taking they action steps they committed to.

“Awaken to the Whispers of Your Soul: A Women’s Mountain Retreat” was a life altering experience for me personally. It was an intimate, soul-revealing journey into the discovery of the riches we all hold within ourselves, riches that ofkaren mercereau 2ten remain hidden, buried beneath years of “life’s little traumas” and the immediacy of our work lives. I came away knowing that this is a journey I have just begun, ready to continue to explore.”

Are you Paying Attention to Signs and Synchronicities?

Do you sometimes wonder if God is trying to send you messages?  Do things happen in your life and you wonder if you are supposed to pay attention to a deeper meaning of what’s going on right in front of you?

Time to pay attention.

When you become more conscious of your life, through intentions or reflections, you will see how the divine messages come to you.  Conscious awareness to the signs and synchronicities that show up in your life can be an eye opener and not just a coincidence.

It took me while, and when I began to pay attention, I was amazed.

My personal journey of conscious awareness began about seven years ago when I was in the midst of what I call my mid-life reflection.  I took a look at my life and asked myself if I was happy.  I could see the chaos and dysfunction in me and around me.  I stopped blaming others for my unhappiness, took responsibility for it and dove head first into the discovery and healing of me.

As soon as I made the shift to conscious awareness, I could finally see my divine path of happiness right in front of me.

I paid attention to my energy and how I felt in the presence of other people.  I learned to let go of those relationships that drained my energy.  I was then guided to more positive and loving relationships in my personal and professional life.  Those relationships are the ones that fueled my positive energy.

When I would ask God for a sign to guide me, it would be shown.  Not necessarily in my timing, but in divine timing.

This was a sign given to me by a fellow USM student. She picked me out of the crowd and gave it to me. It surely was an obvious sign for me!

I had to be patient and trust that I would be guided.  Sometimes the sign would clearly indicate where I was NOT supposed to be.  Then I would change paths instead of trying to force my will on something that was not meant to be.

When you follow the signs that bring you to your divine path, life actually becomes more peaceful and joyful.

When you take the time to reflect on your life, pay close attention to what manifests in your life.  Here are my simple take away tips for you to follow your divine path:

1.      Take quiet time to pray and meditate each morning and set your intentions for your day, not your to-do list, but intentions of how you want to be.

2.      Ask God (or whatever your higher power might be) to show you signs of your divine path.

3.      At the end of each day, take time to reflect and review what messages you may have been shown.

4.      Let go of any negative attitudes, actions and behaviors that no longer serve you or your path.

5.      Acknowledge your gratitude for all the goodness and lessons in your life.

I challenge you to move into these action steps to discover more about your divine path. Begin today!

If you have already experienced the divinity of signs and synchronicities in your life, I’d LOVE to hear about them!  Share here in the comment section below.  If you love this post and think that it would be helpful to your peeps, please share it.  Enjoy your journey!!

Much love and light,

A Success Story: The Personal Evolution of a Friend

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.  I had the honor of watching her evolve, month by month.  Embracing each new lesson she had the courage to take an honest look inside herself.  And she chose to change.

I would not have guessed that this charming woman 20 years my senior would be such a good friend when I met her 19 years ago. She was closer to my Mom’s age and I even introduced them thinking they would have more in common.  But much to my surprise, my friend felt more connected to me and my young energy than my Mom.  That was when I confirmed that my friend Carolyn was truly a young spirit deep inside.

We had connected throughout the years and she even began attending the earliest version of my self improvement workshops in 2005.  Carolyn was open to learning and growing, but I could also see that she was still feeling the pain of some emotional trauma a few years before.  And she was there to learn and heal.

However, I could see the woundedness deep within her.  Her trauma was deep and lasting. Yet as time had passed her anger and upset were not as present, but I could see there were still some lingering emotions.

As she began attending my Heartfelt Learning Workshops in January 2011, she was right there to support a new area of my consulting practice.  But this was different.  These workshops presented Carolyn with material that made her think about herself.  She spent quality time looking inside herself and began to truly connect with the group who attended each month.

But what was different for Carolyn is that she was embracing the learning material each and every month.  She took the information to heart.  She spent the time between sessions observing herself and her behavior.  SHE TOOK THE MATERIAL SERIOUSLY!!

She would be the first one to share her experiences from the prior month and had more questions.  She was discovering more about her triggers and upsets, and more importantly, how to process them and release them.  She embraced the lessons on forgiveness for herself and others.  She reframed old messages and beliefs into beautiful affirmations that supported her inner growth.

Each month she was releasing old emotional baggage that no longer served her.  She was making room for powerful positive energy to come into her life.  Every time I saw her, she was lighter and brighter.  She was using all the life skills tools she was learning and now they were a part of her everyday life.  She was evolving right before my eyes.  For someone who already had so much fun, lively spirit, others around her could see more sparkle and glow emanating from her.

From my observations of my dear friend, here are the steps she took to create her success in her personal evolution:

1.  She made a commitment to the learning.

2.  She took the quiet time to reflect on her thoughts, actions and behaviors.

3.  She lived the lessons and made them part of her everyday life.  She practiced the tools and used the resources

4.  She moved to a place of vulnerability with the group and felt safe enough to share, knowing that she would be loved and not judged.

4.  She shared (and continues to share) her new healthy way of being with her friends, family and clients as well.

5.  She loved (and continues to love) herself enough to invest the time in learning, healing and growing.

My friend Carolyn is truly an evolved woman and I have had the honor and privilege to witness her transformation.  She now shares herself differently with the world.  She sees the beauty and light inside herself and gives others permission to shine their light as well!

Love ya Mojo!!

The Power of Intentional Living

You may not realize how powerful your thoughts and ideas are within your world.  Every thought that you have in your brain sends a message to yourself about your reality and moves into your consciousness.  It becomes your reality, positive or negative.

So what would it look like if you have positive thoughts and direction about what you want your life to be like?  This is intention.  Webster’s Dictionary defines “intention” as, “A determination to act in a certain way.”  Intention allows you to focus your attention on what you want to create.

Change your thoughts, energy and actions towards your intention.  This is when you can utilize the power within you. Your personal power, not your ego power.  This is the power that comes from deep within your heart and soul.  When you set your intentions of how you want to be and what you want in your life, you create the blueprint.  Intentions…

…are your personal power.

…are your ownership of your life.

…are your commitment.

…allow you to see the vision.

…precede and inspire vision.

…live between potential and action.

In addition to thinking about what you want, you can activate more energy when you write your intentions down with pen and paper.  Visualize yourself in that space of your intentions.  See yourself moving through it.  How does it feel in your visualization?   Make it come alive within your consciousness.   The more senses you use during these activities just increases the positive energy.  When you are doing these activities you are telling the Universe what you desire and see in your future.

Only then, is the challenging step with intentions.  You must surrender your ego attachment to it and release it to the Universe. If it is in your highest good to manifest, it will show up in your life.  Pay attention to the signs and synchronicities around you.  This is when you realize that you are not alone and your intentions are co-created with Spirit.  Trust and allow Spirit to move through you.

Through the power of intentions, you have the ability to create the life you truly desire.

Honor and Integrity Begin from Within

“To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”  ~William Shakespeare,

Have you ever been in a situation where you knew deep in your heart you should have said “no” to something, but you said “yes” anyway?

Recently I have been tested about being true to myself and the work I do.  A few years ago when I began my consulting practice, I had someone ask me to propose on a multitude of training programs.  As I was creating the material for the proposal, I had this feeling in my heart that was not comfortable.  Some topics I was an expert in and some I clearly was not. However, I was motivated to grow my business, I proposed it anyway.  In the end, I was not awarded the contract.  That was a huge lesson in listening to my heart.  A huge lesson in compromising myself for the almighty dollar.

As time went on and my practice grew, I became clearer and clearer about what my specialties are.  These are the areas where I am in my golden space and where I shine.  I know it in my heart and I feel it every time I meet with someone for a coaching session or stand in front of a large group to facilitate training.

I’ve had to ask myself…do I honor myself by listening to my inner voice and trust my gut?  Do I keep my honor code with myself?   Do I love and honor myself enough to turn away work if I won’t be authentic in it?  It’s taken me time (remember, I’m still human!) but the answers are yes to all these question.  I get to the yes a whole lot faster when I remember my honor code with myself.  As I’ve evolved in the wisdom of my life, I know that before I can have honor or integrity with others, I must have it for myself.

Have you spent reflective time to ask yourself……do I listen to my inner voice?  Do I trust my gut to tell me when something doesn’t “feel” right?  Do I make choices in my life that honor my Self?  Do I keep my word with myself?  Pay close attention next time you are given an opportunity to make an honoring choice for yourself.  You will truly feel the difference when you come from that deep place inside that is authentically you.

Why is it Scary and Empowering to be Vulnerable?

Somehow I knew it was time.  I knew the topic of the table top discussion at the networking meeting was about humbling moments as a leader.  Was it time to tell a piece of my humbling story?  Was it time to reveal this painful situation in my life?  Was this the right group to share with?  Was it safe to be so vulnerable?  In my heart I knew I had been protecting this part of me that was so hurt.  I could not have shared this experience a year ago without crying.

I knew in my heart that this was a healing opportunity for me.  To say it out loud and to show my humanness.  My heart was ready to share.  I took my wall down and shared my humbling experience with 7 other ladies.  Voice cracking and hands trembling….I did it.  I felt naked, raw and scared right afterwards.  Will they judge me as being weak for sharing?  As everyone continued to share, they too opened themselves up to the “power” of vulnerability.  As fearful as I was after I shared, I felt empowered, as I think they all did as well.  I felt like I let some fresh air to a wound that was healing.

It brought to light so much of a book I read this past year by Dr. Brene Brown, The Gifts of Imperfectionand a very profound excerpt from her book that resonated with me:

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it.  Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy….the experiences that make us the most vulnerable.  Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”

I feel as though this experience was brought to me because it was time.  Divine timing none the less, and I feel blessed to be able to experience it and share it.  But somehow the experience of being vulnerable is a way for me to grow more courage muscles….and live more authentically in the heart centered space I choose to be in.

When was the last time you opened up and allowed yourself to be vulnerable? Did you feel the fear and power?  We all have challenges in our lives and when we face them with an open heart, that vulnerability is the key that allows our light to shine.  Shine on!!

How Joy-filled is Your Life?

When you look at the word ‘joy’, what sort of reaction does your body feel?  Is it pleasant or unpleasant?  Is it a believable experience for you in your life?   I seem to always be talking about self reflection and asking these questions that make you think!

The word ‘joy’ is defined in dictionary.com as, “The emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying.” Now how does that make your feel?

The feeling of joy does not always cross our path in our everyday lives.  You may feel as though your life is joy-less. Perhaps it is.  However, you can make that change.  You can consciously bring joy into your life.   Sit down and just write down activities that bring you joy.   Close your eyes and visualize yourself doing it,  then go do it!

Walking in a garden.  Watching children play.  Holding hands with your loved ones.  Painting or some creative activity.  What truly brings you joy?  Honor your SELF by bringing a joy-filled activity to your life at least once a day. Treat yourself to the experience of “great delight or happiness caused by something good or satisfying!” And remember, when you are feeling  joy, your body is releasing endorphins, the ‘feel good’ hormones.  All good stuff for your health and well being!

See the adorable picture in this post?  This is a picture of my sweet Granddaughter Savannah….she just melts my heart and brings me joy!!!

The precious gift about joy is that when your go looking for it, it will show itself to you!  En-joy!!!

Are You Allowing Your Light to Shine?

We all have a beautiful light within us.  We are meant to shine our light in the brilliance of who we really are.  We begin our lives as sweet innocent babies that just emanate our light.  However, as we age our glow becomes dimmed by the “nos” and “shoulds” in our lives from our parents and society.  We bring this dimness to our adulthood and wonder why we feel empty and what our lives’ purpose is.

We are the only ones who have control of that light and how it shines.  I kept my light dim for a long time because it was safe to keep it dim.  By keeping my light dim, I did not stand out and I could easily “hide” and not be seen.  I did not have to compete with the large egos around me.  Staying small and keeping my light dim was safe.   Until the light within me knew better.  I knew I had it, but I had to have to courage to step out into my light.

As I took those baby steps (I’m a toe dipper, not a diver!) towards my light, I saw that I had nothing to be afraid of.  The more I stood in my authenticity and my light, I knew that this is where I wanted to live my life.  There was no going back.  I’m here to stay in the brilliance of my own light!  Marianne Williamson says it best from her book A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.…And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Take the time to look deep inside and listen to yourself.  Is your light waiting for you to let it free and shine with the brilliance of who you truly are?
